The national article cap for cost-free Open Access (OA) publishing in Wiley’s full OA journals is expected to be reached on September 10, 2026 (exact date subject to change). If your article is accepted for publication in a Wiley full OA journal after this quota is reached, the OA fees will not be covered by the Read & Publish agreement, and you will be invoiced directly. A new Read & Publish agreement with Springer Nature secures broad reading access and cost-free Open Access publishing for researchers at the 4RIs and other Swiss institutions from 2026 to 2029. Negotiated by a working group of swissuniversities and the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries, this agreement brings the full Springer Nature portfolio into a single national framework.

Spring is at our doorsteps – and with it the start of Lib4RI's training series 2026: Essential Skills for Today’s Researchers for PhD students and all other interested members of the 4 research institutes Eawag, Empa, PSI & WSL. In 2026, we offer seven hands-on modules (3-6 h each) at the main sites of the 4RIs. All sessions are in-person and can be booked individually. Participants who attend four or more modules can request a recommendation for 1 ECTS credit point.

Digital Cleanup Day, happening this year on 21 March, is a global initiative that encourages everyone to tidy up their digital spaces in the name of sustainability. The publishing landscape is evolving, impacting how research is published and accessed. We are starting the year with important updates to our e-resources collections. In a recent article, Eawag highlighted their commitment to Open Science. More than 87% of Eawag’s scientific publications in the period from 2020 to 2024 are publicly accessible through DORA, says Lib4RI head Lothar Nunnenmacher.

We are happy to announce that we will start a writing lab, targeted at young researchers starting their career as scientific authors. The writing is a three-part series designed to build writing skills, confidence, and momentum by providing short introductions to scientific reading, writing and reviewing, followed by dedicated work time.
