Wiley full Open Access quota exhausting in September: what authors need to know

Lib4RI

The national article cap for cost-free Open Access (OA) publishing in Wiley’s full OA journals is expected to be reached on September 10, 2026 (exact date subject to change). If your article is accepted for publication in a Wiley full OA journal after this quota is reached, the OA fees will not be covered by the Read & Publish agreement, and you will be invoiced directly. Learn how to secure alternative funding and strategically time your submissions below.

The current 2025–2027 swissuniversities agreement with Wiley sets an annual cap on cost-free OA publications. While initially expected to cover the publishing needs of Swiss researchers, the cap for full OA journals is projected to run out much earlier than anticipated. A new quota will become available for articles accepted from January 1, 2027, onward.

What journals does this apply to?

  • This ONLY affects Wiley’s full OA journals (journals where all articles are published Open Access, such as Advanced Science, Journal of Synchrotron Radiation, or Ecology and Evolution).
  • This DOES NOT affect Wiley’s hybrid journals (journals where authors can choose between OA or subscription publishing).

Tip: The Lib4RI Search Tool makes it easy to identify full OA journals and provides an overview of funding options for OA fees.

Your funding options after the 2026 quota is exhausted:

A) The article is the result of an SNSF-funded project.
The Article Processing Charge (APC) may be eligible for SNSF funding. This funding for OA publications is independent of the project budget and can even be applied for after the project has ended. Any co-author who acknowledges SNSF funding is eligible; the funded author does not need to be the corresponding author.

B) The article is NOT funded by the SNSF, and the APC is CHF 2500 or less (excluding taxes).
If the article is not eligible for SNSF funding, it may be eligible for support from the Lib4RI Open Access Fund. The fund supports researchers at Eawag, Empa, PSI, and WSL who publish in pure Open Access, peer-reviewed journals, provided that no other source of funding is available. The APC must not exceed CHF 2500 per article, excluding VAT. Partial funding of higher APCs is not possible.
For details and the application procedure, see our Open Access fund page.

C) The article is NOT funded by the SNSF, and the APC is more than CHF 2500 (excluding taxes).
Unfortunately, the library cannot provide funding for these articles. You will need to secure alternative sources of funding.

Strategic timing for submissions

Because only articles accepted between early September 2026 and the end of the year are excluded from the agreement, timing your submission and peer-review process is crucial. A new quota will become available for articles accepted after January 1, 2027. With careful planning, you may be able to avoid having your article accepted during the final months of 2026 when its APC would not be covered.
