GeoVITe now Open Research platform for geospatial data

Lib4RI

GeoVITe is an online portal offering free access to federal and cantonal geospatial data for research and teaching. The service has been expanded into an open research platform through the FAIRGeo project.

Since March 2026, GeoVITe has been freely available to everyone without authentication. Before that, access was restricted to researchers and employees in the ETH domain. Its upgraded infrastructure supports stable URL-based queries, the long-term sharing of datasets and visualisations, improved metadata and the future assignment of persistent identifiers such as DOIs.

A new GeoVITe Data Manager will also allow researchers to upload, publish and manage their own geodata. Developed with input from the research community, these improvements are turning GeoVITe from a download portal into a collaborative hub for findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) geoscience data.

GeoVITe is jointly operated by ETH Library and the Institute of Cartography and Geoinformation. Researchers of the 4RI have contributed to the initial development of the platform. Data includes Swisstopo time series, historical maps and digital elevation models.
