Joint project: Using DORA to bring more science to Wikipedia

Lib4RI

Lib4RI and Wikimedia Switzerland (WMCH) have started a joint project to close knowledge gaps on Wikipedia using publications in DORA. A jointly financed Wikipedian-in-Residence at the library will lead the work and engage with researchers and our institutions.

How it works

Together with Matteo Cinelli at the University of Rome, WMCH has developed an analytical workflow that compares DORA against Wikipedia to surface topics that are under-covered on one of the most-used websites on the internet. Google Trends data then shows which of these gaps are of active public interest, so that researchers can be approached where their contribution has the greatest effect. The Wikipedia-in-residence will support researchers in their effort to improve and create articles for Wikipedia to make sure that their research area is well and correctly represented on the free encyclopedia. This will improve the visibility of 4RI researchers and serve the public by ensuring high-quality content on Wikipedia.

Open position

The call for a Wikipedian in Residence to lead this work is now open — at least 12 months, 80–100%, based at one of the Lib4RI locations. See the full call here.

Looking ahead

The project is designed to be transferable, so that other libraries, research institutions and Wikimedia chapters can adopt the same approach. Knowledge transfer and science communication are core to the mission of the four Swiss federal research institutes, and the aim is for this project to become a lasting part of how the 4RIs — and others — engage with the public.
