E-Books and Print Books


Lib4RI's collections of books and other media are listed in our swisscovery catalogue. Lib4RI currently licensed and purchased some 500,000 e-books and 100,000 print books. Additonally, you can find millions of media held by some 470 other swiss academic libraries. Affiliates of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL have access to these media free-of-charge. E-books are readily accessible via the tab «Available Online». An institutional network connection (from outside via VPN) is required. Print books may be requested for loan and are delivered to your home library (see Borrow Books).

American Chemical Society (ACS)

Conference proceedings from technical divisions' symposia of the American Chemical Society (ACS) from 1974 onwards.

Alliance of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Societies (ACSESS)

Browse ACSESS' Digital Library for books and multimedia products published by the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America.

American Institute of Physics (AIP)

Access to AIP e-books covering subjects such as chemistry, physics, material sciences and engineering.

AIP Conference Proceedings report findings presented at many of the most important scientific meetings around the world.

American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)

Access to the complete proceedings collection from the American Society of Civil Engineers

American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

Access to the complete e-book collection from the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) between 1993 and 2012.

American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME)

Access to all e-books between 1993-2017

Artech House

Access to 50 titles from Artech House.

Cambridge University Press (CUP)

Users at Eawag, Empa, PSI, and WSL have access to all e-books in the Science & Engineering Collection from 1920 onward.

Centre for Agricultural Bioscience International (CABI)

Access to the CABI e-books Archive 2000-2007 and 2011 onwards. Many books from CABI published in print are not available as e-books.

CRC Press

All CRC e-books from 1998-2019 are available via the Taylor & Francis homepage. More than 15000 titles from the CRC SCITECHnetBASE are included in this package.

  • Access to the single netbases is available via collections.

EBSCO

The aggregator EBSCO offers access to e-books from many different publishers.

Edward Elgar

More than 400 e-books published between 1997-2016:

Access to individual e-books is indicated by a full green circle.

Access to all e-book collections published by Elsevier.

Hanser

The Hanser eLibrary offers technical information for engineers and technicians. It covers the fields of metal and plastic processing, electric and electronic engineering, computer science, economy and management. Available are all titles published since 2011.

IEEE

Access to the proceedings from over 1,400 IEEE and IET annual conferences

IOP

The Institute of Physics provides access to its two e-book collections: IOP Expanding Physics and IOP Concise Physics with more than 180 titles.

IWA Publishing

Water Intelligence Online provides access to reference books and research reports covering water, wastewater and related environmental topics published by the International Water Association (IWA).

JSTOR

Lib4RI offers thousands JSTOR e-books from the subject areas Business & Economics, Political Science, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Science & Technology, Social Sciences, Sustainability and Transportation. The advanced search option on the JSTOR platform allows for the restriction of the search to e-books.

McGraw-Hill

McGraw-Hill's AccessEngineering platform offers many e-books and lots of other material.

Morgan & Claypool

Organised by series, Morgan & Claypool's synthesis and colloquium lectures offer valuable entry points into topics from bio science, computer science and informatics, engineering, mathematics and statistics, and many more….

National Research Council of Canada (NRC)

The complete set of e-books published by the NRC (National Research Council of Canada) between 1993-2010.

OECD

OECD iLibrary: Thousands of e-books by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). A broad range of topics are covered including Agriculture and Food, Energy and Nuclear Energy, Urban, Rural and Regional Development and Science and Technology.

Oxford University Press (OUP)

Various titles available from OUP.

O’Reilly (previously Safari Books Online)

O’Reilly for higher education offers many thousand e-books (and videos) in computer science and information technology from various publishers.

Authentication: Please select your home institute and use your SWITCHaai (Shibboleth) credentials to login.

Usage restrictions:

  • No download of e-books available.
  • Printing limited to a few pages at a time.

Proquest EBook Central (previously MyiLibrary)

Proquest EBook Central offers access to selected e-books from various publishers. Per request, printing and downloading (PDF) is restricted to 20% of a title.

Routledge

Access to more than 2,600 Routledge titles is available via the Taylor & Francis platform. Please access the «Environment & Sustainability Collection» 2014 & 2015 with its 21 Routledge Handbooks by this link.

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)

The entire collection of chemical science e-books published by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

SAGE

SAGE provides access to more than 5,000 titles from social science.

SIAM

Access to all e-books published by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) since 1971.

SPIE

All proceedings published by the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) from are available. The SPIE E-books are available from 1989 to 2013.

Springer

Access to many thousand English and several German e-books published by Springer.

In addition to online access to Springer e-books, members of Eawag, Empa, PSI & WSL can take advantage of the Springer MyCopy programme. Springer offers printed softcover editions of English e-books that are licensed by Lib4RI and are included in this print-on-demand programme. These MyCopy titles are for personal use only and have black and white book content. The price for each book is CHF 24.95 and includes shipping & handling, excluding local VAT/Sales tax. Taylor & Francis

Access to many thousand titles covering areas such as construction, energy, engineering, environment & sustainability, geography and planning published between 2008 and 2019.

Trans Tech Publications (TTP)

Users at Eawag, Empa, PSI, and WSL have access to the Material Science Foundations e-books from TTP, comprising 62 e-books from 1998-2016.

Wiley Online Books

The Wiley Online Library offers several thousand e-books and reference works in the fields of science and technology. All titles marked with an open lock symbol are licensed.

World Scientific Books

World Scientific offers a couple of thousand e-books in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry and material science, environmental science, life science, computer science, engineering, medicine and healthcare, business and economics, social science and Asian studies.

  • E-Books Directory
    E-Books Directory is a daily growing list of freely downloadable ebooks, documents and lecture notes found all over the internet.

  • Directory of Open Access Books
    The Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) aggregates metadata for more than 1,000 academic, open access e-books from 35 publishers; each book record has a link to the full text of the monograph on the publisher's website or repository. All books listed in DOAB are subjected to independent and external peer review prior to publication.

  • Google Books
    Readers can preview up to 20% of the pages of most out-of-print books for free. They can also view and download the out-of-copyright books.

  • KVK – Karslruhe Virtual Catalog
    Meta search interface for more than 500 million books and serials in library and book trade catalogues worldwide. Good for searching the holdings of European libraries.

  • Open Library
    Open Library is a catalog with well over 20 million edition records online and access to 1.7 million scanned versions of books and links to external sources like WorldCat and Amazon.

  • swissbib
    Swissbib is the metacatalogue of more than 800 Swiss libraries. It provides a simple, fast and comprehensive gateway to scientifc information.

  • WorldCat
    WorldCat is the world's largest network of library content and services. It includes the holdings for thousands of academic, public, special and national libraries worldwide.
