Researchers at the four research institutes Eawag, Empa, PSI, and WSL have more options now than ever to publish their research results Open Access (OA) and free of charge. Several new agreements significantly expand our portfolio of journals, allowing authors to publish their articles OA without having to pay an article processing charge (APC).

Swisscovery – All Scientific Media in Switzerland at Your Fingertips
Search and browse all scientific media, access all online content licensed by Lib4RI, and loan print media from all over Switzerland in a single portal: swisscovery. The new nationwide library system operated by the Swiss Library Service Platform (SLSP) has replaced the NEBIS lending network.

Open Access Big Deals – A Closer Look
The new Swiss Open Access big deals with Elsevier and Springer Nature have been praised as an « important step » and « key milestone » towards achieving the goal of Open Access. Although Open Access big deals undoubtedly offer immediate benefits to scientists, they also might have adverse effects on scholarly publishing in the long run – a downside that is often glossed over. In this commentary, we therefore draw attention to the limitations and flaws of national Open Access big deals.

Coming soon: Publish Open Access in Springer Nature journals free of charge
Swissuniversities and Springer Nature have reached a Memorandum of Understanding for the conclusion of a «read and publish» contract (see swissuniversities and Springer Nature). Once signed, this contract will allow corresponding authors affiliated with all Swiss academic and research institutions participating in the agreement – including Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL – to publish Open Access (OA) in some 2200 Springer Nature hybrid journals.

Publish Open Access in Elsevier journals free of charge
At Elsevier, corresponding authors of Swiss research institutes can make most of their articles available Open Access for the next three years at no extra cost. This is possible because swissuniversities and Elsevier have reached a memorandum of understanding for both reading access to journals and Open Access publishing. After the negotiations with Springer Nature failed, the publisher announced preliminary access to newly published journal content until end of March 2020.

Contracts with Elsevier and Wiley extended – no agreement with Springer Nature
Yesterday, swissuniversities announced the outcome of the Open Access negotiations with publishing powerhouses Elsevier, Wiley and Springer Nature (see press release). With Elsevier and Wiley, they extended the current subscription contracts and signed «memoranda of understanding» for «read and publish» deals. With Springer Nature, no agreement of any kind was reached.

Submit the Correct Version of Your Article to DORA
Most articles in DORA can be made freely accessible to everyone without any additional costs, neither for you as the author, nor for the reader (Green Road to Open Access). This gets you a wider audience to increase your research impact and facilitates compliance with Open Access policies of research funders. However, it can be a bit tricky to choose the right version of your work to share. Here we outline the different versions of your article, each version corresponding to the different stages of the peer review and publication process.

5 YEARS LIB4RI – EXCELLENT SERVICES FOR EXCELLENT RESEARCH
Hard to believe: it is already five years since the libraries of the four Federal Research Institutes Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL were merged into Lib4RI. To mark our anniversary, we would like both to take a brief look back on the last few years and to establish a framework for our development over the coming years.
