Zotero is a powerful Open Source literature manager. The free version is fully operable without restrictions. Cloud storage is limited to 300 MB, but can be upgraded ($).

What you can do

  • Build a central library of your literature, from journal articles to books, websites, and more
  • Organize your library in collections and sub-collections
  • Create document summaries from your notes, annotations and highlights in the integrated reader
  • Use self-defined tags to efficiently filter your library and use the full-text search to find content
  • Insert citations and a dynamic reference list in your manuscript into your writing with a few clicks

  • Adapt citation and bibliography style to the publisher requirements
  • Sync your personal library online and create group libraries to work with collaborators

  • Open source software (free)
  • Community-based plug-ins and add-ons are available
  • Desktop clients (Windows, MacOS, Linux) with web connectors for various browsers, web client, iOS & Android (readers)
  • Works with MS Word, Libre Office, Google Docs and Quarto. To use in Latex compilers, export the *.bib file or connect with your Overleaf account (Overleaf Premium required)
  • Collaborative writing is possible, but Zotero needs to be used to add or edit citations. A shared library is not required.
  • Web library is free and unlimited for data entries without attached files, i.e. full texts.
  • Free cloud file storage for full-text attachments is limited to 300 MB, but can be upgraded (20-120$/yr)
