Zotero

Zotero is a powerful Open Source literature manager. The free version is fully operable without restrictions. For unlimited cloud storage, create an account using your institutional email address.

What you can do

  • Build a central library of your literature, from journal articles to books, websites, and more
  • Organize your library in collections and sub-collections
  • Create document summaries from your notes, annotations and highlights in the integrated reader
  • Use self-defined tags to efficiently filter your library and use the full-text search to find content
  • Insert citations and a dynamic reference list in your manuscript into your writing with a few clicks
  • Adapt citation and bibliography style to the publisher requirements
  • Sync your personal library online and create group libraries to work with collaborators

Important notes on cloud storage

  • To register your Zotero account, you have to agree to Zotero's terms of service.
  • The data is hosted on a third-party server based in the U.S.. You are not allowed to upload any sensitive or confidential data to the Zotero cloud! For more information, see the directives on cloud usage and data protection of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL (internal links, VPN required).
  • Set access to group libraries to "Private" or "Public Closed". Private groups can only be found via direct invitation. Public closed libraries are findable, but access is moderated. Do only share access with your direct colleagues or peers! Sharing full text in a "Public Open" collection is a violation of copyright!
