Further internal information: Update on Wiley negotiations

Update on 16. June:

Swissuniversities has successfully concluded negotiations with Wiley, resulting in a new Open Access agreement through 2027.

Effective immediately, 4RI-affiliated researchers can submit articles to be published Open Access in both hybrid and full Open Access journals from Wiley. This marks a significant upgrade from the previous agreement, which only covered hybrid journals.

What about previously published articles?

  • Articles published behind a paywall in 2025 will be converted to Open Access retroactively. Wiley will contact authors directly about this process.
  • No refunds will be provided for Open Access fees already paid in 2025.

More details will follow soon.

Update on 7. May:

Although the negotiations are still ongoing, it is likely that a new Open Access agreement will be finalised within the next few weeks. This agreement is expected to cover Open Access fees for publishing in both hybrid and full Open Access journals from Wiley.

Part of the expected agreement are also the following conditions:

  • There will be no refunds for Open Access fees already paid in 2025 for articles published in either hybrid or full Open Access journals.
  • Articles published behind a paywall in 2025 can be made Open Access retroactively once the agreement is in place. Authors will be contacted by Wiley.

Articles currently under review or about to be submitted in Wiley journals

To ensure your article can be made Open Access retroactively at no cost, please follow the instructions below based on the type of journal:

For hybrid journals (= journals that offer Open Access as an option):

  1. Once your article is accepted, select the option to publish behind a paywall (do not choose the Open Access option).
  2. If you receive an invoice, do not pay it.

For full Open Access journals (= journals that publish all articles Open Access):

  1. Submit your article to Wiley’s full Open Access journal.
  2. Choose the “Author Pays” option.
  3. If you receive an invoice, do not pay it.

Once the new agreement has been finalised authors will be contacted by Wiley and offered to make their article Open Access under the agreement.

As soon as we have news on the current status of the negotiations, we will inform you on our page on Open Access agreements.
