Data Storage

Cloud storage offers secure and reliable alternative to local storage for large amounts of data, ensuring that researchers can access their files from anywhere while maintaining high levels of security. All institutes provide cloud storage with best-practice backup systems, protecting against data loss and ensuring continuity. With cloud storage, researchers can efficiently manage, share, and collaborate on data, all while benefiting from robust security protocols and easy access across different devices and locations.

Library recommendation: In case of data storage and backup for personal projects and internal (within the institute) collaborations, we recommend the use of the institutional data storage solutions (see below). For other collaborations, SWITCHdrive is recommended for projects with limited data volumes. For larger data volumes, we recommend setting up an S3 storage solution.

Institutional data storage solutions

  • Homedirectory on shared virtual server cluster with mirrored sites in Dübendorf; snapshot and tape backups. Snapshots are created hourly (kept 48 hours), half-daily (kept for 31 days), and daily (kept for 90 days).

  • High-performance servers integrated with petabyte-scale archive; SciCat interface; regular backups. List of data storage solutions here. Backup frequency depends on the chosen solution.

  • Centralized servers with RAID and daily backups; long-term archiving to EnviDat or offline media; cloud storage supported. The WSL fileserver can be configured for different back-up regimes, depending on the needs of the project.
