New session 2026/2027

Sometimes you are confronted with organisational, strategic or technical questions that go beyond your field of research. To what extent can AI be used in writing? Will the Article Processing Costs (APC) for your Open Access publication be covered? And how are publications and research outputs measured and assessed?

These questions have one thing in common: there's a librarian for that!

Topics

  • Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are already an important help in scientific writing and publishing. AI offers many advantages and can be immensely helpful in that process. But AI tools can also be misused and be an element of malpractice. This led to new policies from publishers and journals on how to declare the use of AI in scientific publications. This presentation will give an overview about such policies and link it to copyright, guidelines on scientific integrity and technical developments.

    Speaker: Michael Bachmann, Publication Services

  • Abstract: Open Access (OA) has become the standard model for academic publishing. In individual cases, however, it is difficult to obtain comprehensive, up-to-date and reliable information about the open-access options for a particular journal.

In the presentation, you will see, how the Lib4RI Search Tool tackles this issue by bringing together information on OA from various sources in a straightforward interface.

This includes (a) customized information on institutional Read&Publish agreements, (b) information on Gold OA journals, including APCs and possible funding options and (c) filtered options for Green OA that are relevant to our local institutional repository, DORA. This short presentation introduces the tool and provides some background information.

Speaker: Lothar Nunnenmacher, Head of Lib4RI

  • Abstract: Open Science relies on open access to ensure that research results are accessible and reusable by the global community. However, reliance on proprietary software can hinder these goals by creating barriers such as vendor lock-in, restrictive licensing, or software that becomes unavailable as time passes. Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) provides a sustainable alternative by ensuring data sovereignty and long-term accessibility for researchers.

This presentation will explore how FOSS addresses these challenges, and how we can integrate FOSS in research data management workflows. Finally, we will present a proposed series of new training modules at Lib4RI designed to facilitate the use of FOSS for research data management through hands-on application for your data pipelines.

  • H-index, publication and citation counts are very classic measures in research assessment. Learn how we retrieve these numbers for reporting, how you can get an overview yourself and which alternatives to traditional measures are on the table.

  • Abstract:  Need a standard for your paper, project or next experiment? Finding the right one, and getting access to the full text, can sometimes be surprisingly tricky.

In this Coffee Lecture, we’ll show you how to navigate the world of standards with the help of Lib4RI. You’ll learn where to search, how to find the standard you need, and what to do when it’s not immediately available. We’ll use practical examples and a live search in our standard portal Nautos to make the process as simple as possible.

Because finding a standard shouldn’t become a research project of its own.
