On a regular basis, Lib4RI offers various courses for members of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL.


Spring 2020: Searching & Managing Scientific Information


Due to the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) all modules have been cancelled.

Lib4RI’s biannual introductory course for PhD students and other affiliates of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL.

The course is split into seven modules (ca 3-6h each) for which sessions can be booked individually.

  • In module 1, «Searching Scientific Information», you become skilled in finding relevant scientific information using suitable tools offered by Lib4RI
  • In module 2, «Scientific Publishing: From Writing to Sharing», you receive tips on how to prepare, write, publish and share your scientific articles, including information about the review and publication process
  • In module 3, «Open Access & Copyright» you become acquainted with the principles of Open Access (OA) and learn how to deal with copyright questions related to scientific works
  • In module 4, «Literature Management with EndNote», you get introduced to scientific literature management with EndNote
  • In module 5, «Getting Started with LaTeX», you are guided in creating your first LaTeX document, with special attention to scientific writing oriented features. The course is for LaTeX beginners.
  • In module 6, «Work on Your Own Project», you work on your own literature project receiving individual assistance
  • In the new module 7, «How to Manage Your Research Data», you get guidelines and good practices for the entire life-cycle of your data, from collection to publication.

On request, students attending four or more modules will receive a recommendation for 1 ECTS credit point.

Course Description

Module 1 – Searching Scientific Information
• How to use Lib4RI’s website and its «Searchbox» for quick information retrieval
• How to effectively access Lib4RI’s electronic resources including link resolver services
• Formulating systematic search queries including Boolean operators, wildcards and truncations
• Examples/exercises using the NEBIS library catalogue, Scopus and Web of Science

Module 2 – Scientific Publishing: From Writing to Sharing
• Steps prior to writing a paper
• How to effectively write a scientific paper
• Tips on the publication process
• Post publication: do’s and don’ts
• Information market and research evaluation

Module 3 – Open Access & Copyright
• Principles of copyright and their applications in science
• Creative Commons (CC) licences and how to use them
• Open Access: different models and new trends
• Research funders’ policies concerning OA
• How to self-archive your work in an OA repository
• Copyright transfer agreements and author rights

Module 4 – Literature Management with EndNote
• Introduction to literature management
• How to import and organise literature information including fulltext PDFs
• Citing references and creating bibliographies in your scientific document using EndNote's Cite-While-You-Write (MS Word plugin)
• How to modify/create output styles using EndNote's style editor

Module 5 – Getting Started with LaTeX
• A not so short summary of LaTeX basics
• Tables, figures and formulae
• The LaTeX error log and common errors to avoid
• BibTeX and citation styles

Module 6 – Work on Your Own Project
• Develop your search strategy and set up your systematic topic search with bibliographic databases such as Scopus & Web of Science
• Critically evaluate your search results
• Tweak your reference management & citation tools (particularly EndNote or BibTeX)

Module 7 – How to Manage Your Research Data
• Get guidelines and good practices for the entire life-cycle of your data, from collection to publication
• Establish your personal state-of-the-art of research data management and set your priorities
• Get your hands dirty with file organisation and storage issues
• Prepare to share your data and code with adequate metadata documentation
• Learn various ways to store and publish your data

Organisation

  • Presentations with examples and exercises (course notes will be available online ca. 1 week prior to the sessions)
  • All modules are held in English
  • Max. 20 participants for sessions of modules 1-3, 5 and 7 (please bring your laptop)
  • Max. 12 participants for sessions of module 4 (computers provided) and module 6 (please bring your laptop)
  • For module 5: Please bring your laptop with a working LaTeX installation. Brief instructions for example installations can be found below ca. 1 week prior to the sessions. Please contact us should you require assistance with your installation.

  • Online registration closes one week prior to each event. Please use the registration links provided in the table below
  • Each venue is open to all members of the 4 research institutes Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL. Modules 1-3 and 7 are offered at Eawag-Empa Dübendorf, PSI Villigen and WSL Birmensdorf. Modules 4-6 will take place at Eawag-Empa Dübendorf (modules 5 & 6 also at PSI Villigen).

Monthly Library Introductions for New Employees


Once a month, typically in the second week, we offer short library introductions (ca 30 min) for new employees of the four research institutes. Introductions are provided at our main library sites at WSL Birmensdorf, Eawag-Empa Dübendorf and PSI Villigen. They are held in English and/or German, as required. New employees receive an invitation via e-mail approximately one week prior to the event.

  • We visit your group or department to discuss your topics of interest. Workshops could for example cover topics such as Open Access, DORA or literature management. For more training options please refer to our flyer Book a Librarian.
  • We are happy to arrange customised training sessions at all locations of the federal research institutes.
