Earlier this week, swissuniversities and Wiley signed a new Open Access agreement, effective through 2027. Researchers affiliated with Eawag, Empa, PSI or WSL can publish their articles Open Access at no additional costs in all journals published by Wiley. Additionally, reading access covers the entire Wiley journal portfolio.
A key improvement is the inclusion of full Open Access journals, a significant expansion from the previous agreement, which only covered Open Access publishing in hybrid journals. There is an annual article quota in place, but it is expected to adequately cover the estimated yearly Swiss publication output.
Articles published behind a paywall since the beginning of 2025 can be converted to Open Access. Wiley will contact the authors of these articles, who will need to sign an Open Access license. No refunds will be provided for Open Access fees already paid in 2025.
The agreement also introduces important provisions for using artificial intelligence (AI). swissuniversities negotiated favourable terms allowing researchers to use Wiley content with AI tools for non-commercial research and academic purposes.

We are grateful that the negotiations with Wiley are now concluded. However, looking ahead, researchers should be aware that negotiations with Springer Nature for an agreement renewal as of 2026 are underway (additionally, the article quota for the Nature Research journals is set to already be filled in early July).
