Lib4RI-Update #41: Searching for Open Access information just got easier

Lib4RI

We’ve upgraded the Lib4RI Search Tool so that Open Access (OA) information is even easier and clearer to find. We have also changed the design to be more streamlined and added new features to ensure the search tool is your one-stop shop for all library-related content.

Improved journal search

The Journals tab provides OA information and funding opportunities to make it easy to view and find up-to-date information on OA publishing options for each journal.

We have now integrated our Search Tool with our institutional repository, DORA. This means that the search for journals is now based on the publications of the researchers of the four research institutes – and no longer on the global results of swisscovery. Therefore, search results now display the most relevant journals for the four research institutes. Furthermore, they are sorted by the number of publications in our repository. Together with the new OA lock symbols, gives you a quick overview of your OA options for the most relevant journals. If a journal does not appear in the first results, there is always the option to expand the search to all results in swisscovery.

The integration is also done in the other direction: For each journal, you can now easily view articles published by other 4RI researchers in this journal.

This update also provides further improvements. Searching in our own database, DORA, leads to a significantly improved search speed for the journals tab. And we now provide a glossary, which defines OA publishing terms.

New tabs for Books and Other resources

The Search Tool also compiles information from numerous sources, so instead of searching multiple platforms separately, it brings together results from a wide range of scholarly sources. However, the results have been a bit overwhelming – and we’ve listened to your feedback in our user survey and made the Search Tool clearer and more intuitive. We’ve put the results for Books into a separate tab (Figure 2), which includes the swisscovery results but also the DORA results for books, book chapters and conference proceedings published by RI researchers. Finally, we created a new tab for Other resources, where you can now find standards, patents, dissertations, maps & geodata, newspapers & magazines, images and results from Wikipedia.

What’s next?

We are always trying to improve our library services, and the Search Tool is no exception. More updates are planned (including searching by journal subject!) and your feedback helps us set priorities and make more improvements. If you have suggestions or ideas, we’d love to hear from you.
