On a regular basis, Lib4RI offers various courses for members of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL.


Spring 2017: Searching & Managing Scientific Information


Lib4RI’s biannual introductory course for PhD students and other affiliates of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL.

This time, our course is split into six modules (ca 3h each) for which sessions can be booked individually.

  • In module 1, «Searching Scientific Information», you become skilled in finding relevant scientific information using suitable tools offered by Lib4RI
  • In the new module 2, «Scientific Publishing: From Writing to Sharing», you receive tips on how to prepare, write, publish and share your scientific articles, including information about the review and publication process
  • In module 3, «Open Access & Copyright» you become acquainted with the principles of Open Access (OA) and learn how to deal with copyright questions related to scientific works
  • In module 4, «Literature Management with Endnote», you get introduced to scientific literature management with Endnote
  • In module 5, «Complementary Exercises to Modules 1 & 4», you have the opportunity to consolidate your knowledge acquired in modules 1 & 4 by hands-on exercises
  • In the new module 6, «LaTeX for Scientific Writing», you are given confidence in using LaTeX for your publications, and learn how to cite properly using BibTeX

On request, students attending four or more modules will receive a recommendation for 1 ECTS credit point.

Course Description

Module 1 – Searching Scientific Information
• How to use Lib4RI’s website and its «Searchbox» for quick information retrieval
• How to effectively access Lib4RI’s electronic resources including link resolver services
• Formulating systematic search queries including Boolean operators, wildcards and truncations
• Examples/exercises using the NEBIS library catalogue, Scopus and Web of Science

Module 2 – Scientific Publishing: From Writing to Sharing
• Steps prior to writing a paper
• How to effectively write a scientific paper
• Tips on the publication process
• Post publication: do’s and don’ts
• Information market and research evaluation

Module 3 – Open Access & Copyright
• Open Access: different models and new trends
• Research funders’ policies concerning OA
• How to self-archive your work in an OA repository
• Principles of copyright and their applications in science
• Copyright transfer agreements and author rights
• Creative Commons (CC) licences and how to use them

Module 4 – Literature Management with Endnote
• Introduction to literature management
• How to import and organise literature information including fulltext PDFs
• Citing references and creating bibliographies in your scientific document using Endnote's Cite-While-You-Write (MS Word plugin)
• How to modify/create output styles using Endnote's style editor

Module 5 – Complementary Exercises to Modules 1 & 4
• Follow the workflow «from topic search to the citation» in a little project
• Possibility to work on your own topic
• Opportunity to ask uncovered questions
• Prior attendance of modules 1 & 4 is mandatory

Module 6 – LaTeX for Scientific Writing
• Short summary of LaTeX basics
• Tables, figures and formulae
• The LaTeX error log and common errors to avoid
• BibTeX, citation styles and tips on JabRef and Zotero
• Preparartion of LaTeX-documents for publishers

Organisation

• Presentations with examples and exercises.
• All modules are held in English.
• Max. 20 participants for sessions of modules 1-3 and 6 (please bring your laptop).
• Max. 12 participants for sessions of module 4 and 5 (computers provided).
• For module 6: Please bring your laptop with working LaTeX and BibTeX installations. Brief instructions for example installations will be available below ca. 1 week prior to the sessions. An extra hour for questions is available after the sessions of module 6.

  • Online registration closes one week prior to each event. Please use the registration links provided in the table below.
  • Each venue is open to all members of the 4 research institutes Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL. For modules 1-3 sessions are offered at Eawag-Empa Dübendorf, PSI Villigen and WSL Birmensdorf. Modules 4-6 will take place at Eawag-Empa Dübendorf. Module 6 is also offered at PSI.
  • For the registration for module 5 prior attendance of modules 1 & 4 is mandatory
  • No course fee.
