FAQ - Articles & Journals

Why can't I access some e-journals?

Should you have troubles accessing electronic articles and journals the following checklist can assist you:

Is your computer registered in the network of Eawag, Empa, PSI or WSL?

E-journals are activated only for members of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL within the networks of theses institutes. Users of Lib4RI, who are not member of these institutes can use the e-journals on the computers in the library.

Publishers control access to e-journals through the IP address of your computer.

The IP-address of your computer is:
Please follow this link to test your IPv6 address.

If you are logged into the network of Eawag, Empa, PSI or WSL, your IP address should be in the following range:

— For users at Eawag and Empa using IPv4: 152.88.xxx.xxx

— For users at Eawag and Empa using IPv6: 2001:620:d:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx

— For users at WSL: or

— For users at PSI: 129.129.xxx.xxx or 192.33.118.xxx (VPN)

— If your IP address falls within these ranges and you encounter access issues, please contact us at eresources@lib4ri.ch.

(The xxx stands for any number between 0 and 255.)

With password secured journals you may be able to get access from outside the network.

You can also access licensed journals from outside the network of the institutes (e.g. from home) via a VPN connection. Please contact your IT department about how to set up a VPN connection.

Note, while VPN from desktops and laptops is generally possible with all research institutes, VPN from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets may be blocked. So, should you lack internet access via your laptop (i.e. no WiFi, no LAN), consider setting up your internet capable (3G or 4G) mobile device as a personal hotspot, connect your laptop to the hotspot (WLAN, Bluetooth or tethered) and activate VPN on your laptop.

Does Lib4RI license the full-text access?

If the library does not subscribe to the e-journal then you will not be able to get access to this resource. All subscribed e-journals are listed in the Lib4RI Journal List. If a journal is not in the list (and not in the list of e-journals requiring a login), the library does not have a current subscription to this journal. However, tables of contents and abstracts are usually available free of charge.

Does the library’s subscription to an e-journal cover the required time period?

Time coverage of subscription to an e-journal varies from journal to journal. You can find detailed information on the subscription period for each journal in the Lib4RI Journal List.

Does the library’s subscription to an e-journal cover your institute?

As a result of the merger of the libraries, access to electronic resources at all four research institutes (Eawag, Empa, PSI & WSL) had been harmonized. That is, e-journals and other electronic resources which had been available at one of the four research institutes are now available at all four institutes. With a few publishers, however, we have not achieved an agreement about the extension of the license yet. Information about any access restrictions for a particular journal are available in the Lib4RI Journal List. If your institute is excluded from the license for a journal, please contact us via the SFX Feedback Form (available in the SFX menu) and we provide you with the requested document.
Of course, we keep on negotiating to provide these journals at all institutes.

Do you need a password to access the full-text articles?

Some publishers require you to login to access the full-text. Here is the list of journals requiring this kind of authentication and the password you need to access the full-text.

Clear the browser cache and delete cookies from your browser

Occasionally, your browser «remembers» a failed access attempt. In these cases, clearing your browser cache and cookies will usually resolve the problem. Restart your browser afterwards. Note that clearing your cache and cookies will result in the loss of all temporary files saved in your web browser.

Are cookies and JavaScript activated in your internet browser?

Some publishers require that your browser accepts cookies and that JavaScript is enabled. Test if your browser accepts cookies and if JavaScript is enabled. Restart your browser after you have enabled cookies and Javascript.

Are you unable to open the PDF-files?

Download and install the newest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Save the PDF-file first on your hard drive and then open it with the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Please contact us via eresources@lib4ri.ch, or call the library at 058 765 5700 if you encounter any problem with the access to journals.

How can I get an article that isn't part of Lib4RI's e-journal subscription?

Should a journal article not be part of our online subscription (check with Lib4RI's E-Journal List ), chances are there is a print copy of the corresponding journal issue available in a NEBIS library and you can file a copy request to obtain a PDF scan of this article. Most conveniently, you can «check the availability in the NEBIS library catalogue to order a copy» via our Link Resolver «Get it at Lib4RI» , which is accessible from Scopus, Web of Science and often directly from the publisher, or, alternatively, from our Lib4RI E-Journal List. If the article isn’t available via NEBIS either, Lib4RI’s document delivery service is happy to order it for you. More details are available in Info #02, including a how-to-guide.

NEBIS copy requests as well as Lib4RI document deliveries are free of charge for members of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL. Please do not file NEBIS copy requests with University of Zurich (UZH) libraries or libraries of Pädagogische Hochschule (PH).

Who can access e-journals licensed by the library?

Licensing agreements with electronic service providers restrict access to electronic resources, for which the library Lib4RI pays a subscription fee, to current members of Eawag, Empa, WSL and PSI. However, most licensing agreements permit visitors to use electronic resources on publicly accessible library computers.

Restrictions on using electronic resources

Access to licensed electronic resources (such as databases, e-journals or e-books) are governed by the conditions of use contained in license agreements between the library Lib4RI and the respective publishers. These licenses vary but have some common elements.

You are generally not allowed to:

  • systematically download from an e-resource, e.g. all articles from one issue of a journal, or an entire e-book. Publishers may monitor use levels of electronic resources and suspend access to this resource in the entire network of the institution if large amounts of information are downloaded in a short time period.
  • share downloaded material with unauthorised users, i.e. anyone who is not a member of Eawag, Empa, PSI or WSL.
  • use e-resources for commercial gain (i.e. reselling, redistributing or republishing licensed content).

Restrictions on using electronic resources from AIP

From AIP, the American Institute of Physics, we got a longer list of Terms of Use (which is, at least more liberal and allows for instance the delivery to a colleague).
