The library Lib4RI invited interested researchers from Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL to this workshop held by Dr Philippe Kamalaprija, a representative for CAS at ACS International. Philippe introduced our newly subscribed product MethodsNow and also provided a best practice demonstration for SciFinder.

MethodsNow features step-by-step instructions for analytical and synthetic methods in areas like water analysis, pharmacology, HPLC, food analysis, natural product isolation analysis, plus:

• easy access to method details from hundreds of thousands of disclosed procedures

SciFinder provides researchers with access to the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) and its digital research environment to search, retrieve, analyse and link chemical information. SciFinder is based on a broad international collection of journals, patents and other sources. The Best Practice SciFinder demonstration will assist you to use the database in a more efficient and productive manner. For example, do you know that when searching a particular topic you should avoid using and/or? Do you know that we have experimental procedures and we can perform retro-synthesis? Do you know how to search Analytic information (categorize)?

Lib4RI’s biannual introductory course for PhD students and other affiliates of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL.

Course Description

Module 1: Searching Scientific Information
• How to use Lib4RI’s website and its «Searchbox» for quick information retrieval.
• How to effectively access Lib4RI’s electronic resources including link resolver services.
• Formulating systematic search queries including Boolean operators, wildcards and truncations.
• Examples/exercises using the NEBIS library catalogue, Scopus and Web of Science.

Module 2: The Publication Process
• Insights to the publication process in scientific journals and problems of the publication market.
Open Access: different models and new trends.
Boost the visibility of your scientific output by establishing your author name.
• Measuring the quality of science: journal impact factors, H-index & co.
• How to cope with copyright questions related to scientific work.

Module 3: Literature Management with Endnote
• Introduction to literature management.
• How to import and organise literature information including fulltext PDFs.
Citing references and creating bibliographies in your scientific document using Endnote's Cite-While-You-Write (MS Word plugin).
• How to modify/create output styles using Endnote's style editor.

Module 4: Complementary Exercises
• Follow the complete workflow «from topic search to the citation» in a little project.
• Possibility to work on your own topic.
• Opportunity to ask uncovered questions.
• Prior attendance of modules 1, 2 & 3 is mandatory.

Organisation:
• Presentations with examples and exercises.
• All modules are held in English
• Max 20 participants for sessions of modules 1 and 2 (please bring your own laptop).
• Max 12 participants for sessions of module 3 and 4 (computers provided).
• On request, students attending all four modules will receive a recommendation for 1 ECTS credit point.

Apr 29, 2015: CAB Abstracts Course


The library Lib4RI invited interested researchers from Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL to this course held by Tom Corser, training manager at CABI.

Course Description

Content

• Database content (serials, subjects, literature types).
• Boolean operators and database search symbols.
• Building searches using the combine feature.
• Unique CABI indexing fields e.g. Cabicodes.
CAB Thesaurus and controlled vocabulary searching.
• Creating search alerts.

Organisation

• Presentations with examples and the opportunity to work on your own subjects.
• Attendees at WSL Birmensdorf are encouraged to bring their laptops. At Eawag-Empa Dübendorf computers are provided.
• Course language is English.
• Maximum number of participants: 12

Trainer

Tom Corser, training manager at CABI. Based at CABI’s head office in the UK, Tom has been with CABI for over 4 years and manages CABI’s customer training for online databases. With a scientific background in applied life sciences and extensive knowledge of database searching, Tom will demonstrate tools that can help attendees discover more content relevant to them when conducting literature reviews. He is particularly happy to discuss individual examples from the audience.

The library Lib4RI invited interested researchers from Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL to this workshop held by Philippe Kamalaprija, a representative for CAS at ACS International.

Workshop Description

SciFinder provides researchers access to the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) and its digital research environment to search, retrieve, analyse and link chemical information. SciFinder is based on a broad international collection of journals, patents and other sources.

The SciFinder workshop is held by Philippe Kamalaprija, a representative for CAS at ACS International. Philippe is an experienced trainer and will include many important aspects of SciFinder. He is particularly happy to discuss individual examples from the audience, so you can also work on your own subjects.
