FAQ - Books

How can I borrow books?

You need to be registered with the Swiss NEBIS lending network to allow for book loans from Lib4RI and other NEBIS libraries. Detailed information is given at Services > Borrow Books and on our information leaflet Info #03 Books. For general information regarding Lib4RI and NEBIS please also refer to FAQ – General.

I work at one of the branches of Eawag, Empa or WSL. How can I order and return books?

If you are registered with Lib4RI / NEBIS as an affiliate of the four federal research institutes, you can order books directly to your office location free of charge. This includes all main offices as well as the branches of Eawag (Dübendorf & Kastanienbaum), Empa (Dübendorf, St Gallen, Thun), PSI (Villigen) and WSL (Birmensdorf, Davos, Cadenazzo, Lausanne, Sion).

Please refer to this table for the appropriate «pickup/delivery» location to choose during your NEBIS order and for details on how to obtain and return books.

Please also see our information leaflets for users at Eawag Kastanienbaum, Empa St Gallen, Empa Thun and WSL Davos.

Can I order books from NEBIS libraries for which my recommended pickup location is not shown?

Depending on the location registered with your NEBIS account different pickup locations are offered for your NEBIS order. To avoid potential delivery charges (invoiced by NEBIS) you should select the appropriate option provided in our list of recommended pickup locations.

There are, however, some NEBIS libraries, for which your recommended pickup location won't be available during the ordering process. Examples are all libraries from the «University of Zurich (UZH)» and the library of «Pädagogische Hochschule (PH)». Should you require a document from one of these libraries please contact our Document Delivery Service.

Can I borrow books that are unavailable via NEBIS?

Should you require books or other documents unavailable via NEBIS please contact our Document Delivery Service for a possible interlibrary loan.

Why can't I access some e-books?

The following checklist should assist you trouble-shooting access issues to electronic books:

Is your computer registered in the network of Eawag, Empa, PSI or WSL?

E-books are activated only for members of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL within the networks of theses institutes. Users of Lib4RI, who are not member of these institutes can use the e-books on the computers in the library.

Publishers control access to e-books through the IP address of your computer.

The IP-address of your computer is: 54.166.211.248
Please follow this link to test your IPv6 address.

If you are logged into the network of Eawag, Empa, PSI or WSL, your IP address should be in the following range:

— For users at Eawag and Empa using IPv4: 152.88.xxx.xxx

— For users at Eawag and Empa using IPv6: 2001:620:d:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx

— For users at WSL: 193.134.200.000-193.134.207.255 or 195.176.244.000-195.176.245.255

— For users at PSI: 129.129.xxx.xxx or 192.33.118.xxx (VPN)

— If your IP address falls within these ranges and you encounter access issues, please contact us at eresources@lib4ri.ch.

(The xxx stands for any number between 0 and 255.)

You can also access licensed e-books from outside the network of the institutes (e.g. from home) via a VPN connection. Please contact your IT department about how to set up a VPN connection.

Note, while VPN from desktops and laptops is generally possible with all research institutes, VPN from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets may be blocked. So, should you lack internet access via your laptop (i.e. no WiFi, no LAN), consider setting up your internet capable (3G or 4G) mobile device as a personal hotspot, connect your laptop to the hotspot (WLAN, Bluetooth or tethered) and activate VPN on your laptop.

Does Lib4RI license the full-text access?

If the library does not subscribe to the e-book you won't be able to get access to this resource. Generally, the availability of a specific e-book is indicated in the NEBIS catalogue under the tab «Online resource» by the connected link resolver service.

Sometimes an e-book is not yet recorded in NEBIS, even though the library has a subscription for it. So, if you can't find a specific e-book in the NEBIS catalogue it can be worthwhile double-checking directly with the publisher. To facilitate this, we provide a list of the most common publishers.

Clear the browser cache and delete cookies from your browser

Occasionally, your browser «remembers» a failed access attempt. In these cases, clearing your browser cache and cookies will usually resolve the problem. Restart your browser afterwards. Note that clearing your cache and cookies will result in the loss of all temporary files saved in your web browser.

Are cookies and JavaScript activated in your internet browser?

Some publishers require that your browser accepts cookies and that JavaScript is enabled. Test if your browser accepts cookies and if JavaScript is enabled. Restart your browser after you have enabled cookies and Javascript.

Are you unable to open the PDF-files?

Download and install the newest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Save the PDF-file first on your hard drive and then open it with the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Please contact us via eresources@lib4ri.ch, or call the library at 058 765 5700 if you encounter any problem with the access to e-books.

Who can access e-books licensed by the library?

Licensing agreements with electronic service providers restrict access to electronic resources, for which the library Lib4RI pays a subscription fee, to current members of Eawag, Empa, WSL and PSI. However, most licensing agreements permit visitors to use electronic resources on publicly accessible library computers.

Restrictions on using electronic resources

Access to licensed electronic resources (such as databases, e-journals or e-books) are governed by the conditions of use contained in license agreements between the library Lib4RI and the respective publishers. These licenses vary but have some common elements.

You are generally not allowed to:

  • systematically download from an e-resource, e.g. all articles from one issue of a journal, or an entire e-book. Publishers may monitor use levels of electronic resources and suspend access to this resource in the entire network of the institution if large amounts of information are downloaded in a short time period.
  • share downloaded material with unauthorised users, i.e. anyone who is not a member of Eawag, Empa, PSI or WSL.
  • use e-resources for commercial gain (i.e. reselling, redistributing or republishing licensed content).
