Open Access Journals in the Science Citation Index Expanded

Jochen Bihn, 18. July 2014

We compiled a list of all Open Access journals included in Science Citation Index Expanded 2013 (SCIE). The journals indexed in the SCIE, the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, and the Social Sciences Citation Index make up the journal content of the Web of Science Core Collection (aka Ā«ISI JournalsĀ»). Almost all of the journals on the list received a Journal Impact Factor from Thomson Reuters.

The list might offer some guidance when selecting a journal for your next publication from the ever growing list of Open Access journals. In addition, all journals on the list qualify for financial support via the Open Access Publication Fund for researchers at Eawag and Empa. The Open Access Fund can only be used to pay charges in journals indexed in the SCIE.

How this list was created:
For the current list we matched the list of SCIE 2013 indexed journals with the journal list from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) (downloaded on July 2nd 2014). This list of 972 Open Access journals was matched against the Scopus Journal List to include the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) 2013, the Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) 2013, and a broad subject classification for each journal.

SNIP and SJR are both citation metrics that aim to measure the impact/influence of scientific journals. Both are freely available and are calculated based on Scopus data. The SJR journal ranking are broadly similar to those generated by Journal Impact Factors.

Other useful resources:
Scopus includes 2’800 gold Open Access journals. An Excel file listing all journals indexed in Scopus is available from Scopus and OA journals can be filtered in this list. Open Access journals indexed in Scopus are also identified in the Directory of Open Access scholarly Resources (ROAD).
